What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and why is it so important?

How can you protect your online accounts using Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?

  • 2 min

In our digital world, online security has become a major concern for everyone. Cybercriminals are using increasingly sophisticated ways to steal personal and financial data. One of the most secure ways to protect your online accounts, including bank accounts, is to use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).

What is Two-Step Authentication?

Two factor authentication is a process that adds an extra layer of security to your accounts beyond the password. Instead of relying on just one password, 2FA requires you to go through two steps to verify your identity:

  • Password: The first step is to enter your password as usual.
  • Additional verification: After you enter your password, you'll need to provide a second form of verification, such as s a code sent via SMS, an email, an authentication app, or biometrics (fingerprint, facial recognition, etc.).

Why is Two-Step Authentication important?

  • Higher protection: Even if someone manages to get your password, they cannot access your accounts without passing the second verification step.
  • Security for your personal and financial data: For important accounts, such as bank accounts, 2FA is a very effective layer of protection against criminal attacks.
  • Prevents fraud: Two-factor authentication significantly reduces the chance of an attacker gaining access to your accounts, even if they obtained your password through phishing or other attacks.

How does Two-Step Authentication work?
After enabling 2FA, whenever you try to access your account, you will be asked to:

  • Enter your password.
  • Provide a second form of authentication, which can be:
  • SMS Code: A code sent to your phone.
  • Authentication app: Using an app like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy, to generate a temporary code.
  • Biometric verification: For some devices, you can use your fingerprint or facial recognition.

Practical example

Let's take an example of how two-factor authentication works: You want to access your online bank account. After entering your password, a code is sent to your phone via SMS. You enter this code on the site and then you can use your account safely. This extra layer of protection makes it much more difficult for cybercriminals to access your accounts even if they have the password.

Benefits of 2FA for our customers

  • Prevents unauthorized access: Even if someone manages to get your password through phishing, malware, or other attacks, they cannot log in without the second code.
  • Greater security for online transactions: Online banking services are particularly vulnerable to cyber-attacks. 2FA ensures that only you can access and transact.
  • Easy to use: Enabling and using 2FA is a simple and quick process that provides added protection without complicating the user experience.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is one of the simplest and most effective methods for safeguarding your online and financial accounts against fraud and cyberattacks. Enabling two-factor authentication for your bank accounts and other important services gives you more control over your digital security, making it much harder for hackers to gain access to your information.
